🍍 Sweet & Sour Chicken – A Classic Indo-Chinese Favorite

Sweet & Sour Chicken is one of the most loved dishes from Chinese cuisine, popular worldwide for its perfect balance of flavors. The crispy golden chicken is tossed in a tangy, glossy sauce made with vinegar, ketchup, and soy, then paired with juicy pineapple chunks and crunchy bell peppers. This restaurant-style dish is surprisingly easy to make at home and pairs wonderfully with plain steamed rice or egg fried rice.

📝 Ingredients

For the Chicken:

500g boneless chicken (cut into cubes)

3 tbsp cornflour

3 tbsp all-purpose flour (maida)

1 egg

Salt & black pepper to taste

Oil for frying

For the Sauce:

1 medium onion (cut into cubes)

1 cup bell peppers (red, yellow, green – cubed)

½ cup pineapple chunks (fresh or canned)

2–3 garlic cloves (finely chopped)

3 tbsp tomato ketchup

2 tbsp vinegar

2 tbsp soy sauce

1 tbsp chili sauce (optional, for spice)

1 tsp sugar (to balance flavors)

½ cup chicken stock or water

1 tsp cornflour (mixed with 2 tbsp water to make slurry)

👩‍🍳 Method

1. Prepare the Chicken

In a bowl, mix cornflour, all-purpose flour, egg, salt, and pepper into a smooth batter.

Dip the chicken cubes and coat evenly.

Deep-fry or shallow-fry until golden and crispy. Set aside.

2. Make the Sauce

Heat 2 tbsp oil in a wok or pan.

Add chopped garlic, onion cubes, and bell peppers. Stir-fry for 1–2 minutes on high flame (keep them crunchy).

Add ketchup, vinegar, soy sauce, chili sauce, sugar, and chicken stock. Mix well.

3. Combine

Add the pineapple chunks and crispy chicken pieces to the sauce.

Stir gently so the chicken stays crispy but well coated.

Add the cornflour slurry and cook until the sauce thickens and turns glossy.

🌟 Serving Suggestion

Serve hot with steamed jasmine rice, egg fried rice, or vegetable noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds or fresh spring onions for an extra touch.
